Walking Culture 2.0 – Outdoor and Indoor Collective Exhibition . Promoting Taipa Village Through Art, Culture and Heritage

To celebrate the 10^th anniversary of the Taipa Village Cultural Association, we are proud to present “Walking Culture 2.0 – Outdoor and Indoor Collective Exhibition”. Returning for its second edition, this showcase features a curated selection of works by 14 distinguished artists who have previously exhibited at Taipa Village throughout the past decade.  Featured artists include graffiti pioneer P.I.B.G.; photographers Chan Hin Io, Ieong Man Pan and Rusty Fox; Portuguese illustrators Ricardo Lima, André Carrilho, Ana Aragão and Macau illustrator Yang Sio Maan;  artist Fan Sai Hong; Chinese painting masters Lio Man Cheong and Chao Iok Leng; fashion designer Clara Brito; visual and conceptual artists Crystal W. M. Chan and Bianca Lei Sio-Chong.

The exhibition seamlessly bridges the gallery and the streetscape. Inside the gallery, visitors can explore the original artworks, alongside a big map showcasing the locations of the artists’ outdoor installations. Throughout the village, large-scale banners (1.8m x 1.2m) are strategically placed, each highlighting an artist’s profile and the creative vision. These installations, crafted with durable waterproof materials and set in wooden frames, feature a colour palette inspired by the iconic pastel hues—green, yellow, and orange—of the area’s heritage architecture.

By integrating art into the fabric of the community, “Walking Culture 2.0” invites visitors to embark on a journey of discovery. It encourages the audience to explore the village’s unique charm and cultural heritage through a leisurely stroll, connecting the outdoor installations back to the original masterpieces within the gallery.

Curator’s statement

To mark the 10th anniversary of the Taipa Village Cultural Association, Walking Culture 2.0 – Outdoor and Indoor Collective Exhibition revisits and expands a curatorial format that positions art as a catalyst for engagement with place. Bringing together fourteen artists who have contributed to the cultural life of Taipa Village over the past decade, the exhibition celebrates a shared history of artistic exchange while reaffirming the Village as a living platform for contemporary creativity.

The participating artists—P.I.B.G., Chan Hin Io, Ieong Man Pan, Rusty Fox, Ricardo Lima, André Carrilho, Ana Aragão, Sara Hung, Fan Sai Hong, Lio Man Cheong, Chao Iok Leng, Clara Brito, Crystal W. M. Chan and Bianca Lei—represent a diverse spectrum of practices, media and cultural perspectives. Collectively, their works reflect the richness and plurality that have come to define the programme of Taipa Village Art Space throughout the years.

Conceived as a dialogue between exhibition space and urban landscape, Walking Culture 2.0 unfolds across two interconnected realms. Within the gallery, visitors encounter original artworks alongside a large-scale map that traces the locations of interventions dispersed throughout the Village. Outside, a series of large-format banners transform streets, squares and passageways into an open-air exhibition, inviting unexpected encounters between art, architecture and everyday life. Framed in timber and rendered in colours inspired by the pastel palette of Taipa’s historic streetscape, these installations establish a visual continuity between contemporary artistic expression and the area’s architectural heritage.

By extending the exhibition into the public realm, Walking Culture 2.0 encourages visitors to experience Taipa Village through a process of walking, observation and discovery. The project proposes a cultural itinerary where artworks become points of orientation, revealing new perspectives on the Village’s history, identity and collective memory, while reconnecting audiences with the original works presented within the gallery.

Artists

1. P.I.B.G.

PIBG2038, graffiti artist from Macao. His artwork is full of characters with remarkable style, playful graphic and contrasting bright colour to show vitality. He is an expert in outputting creative ideas, like applying dimensions of illusion and multi-media into his artwork to showcase his uniqueness. Two signature symbols you may find on his artwork: ‘Love Messenger’ & ‘The gem of the city’, love messenger shows the way he pursues what he loves and the passion by his art, love it and be Bold! Each piece of his artwork is the gift he sent for the city, like a gem shine in the city looking for everyone to explore!

PIBG has been creating graffiti since the late 90s. During his practice, he dug into sculpture, calligraphy, modern painting and graphic design. Since 2000, he has travelled with art to mainland China, Australia, Copenhagen, UK, France, Japan, Thailand, for exhibition, mural creation and creative art events.   In 2004, he founded GANTZ5 with crew of five members, first graffiti art group in Macao, which has become one of the most influential associations in China’s graffiti scene. Their artworks are collected by Macao Museum of Art and showcased in Audiovisual Mapping of the Ruins of St. Paul’s. PIBG is also the organizer of Outloud international street art festival, yearly biggest street art event in Macau since 2017, one of the events included in Art Macao.

2. Chan Hin Io

Chan Hin Io started his photographic career in 1996 and has specialised in documenting Macau since 1999. He has published more than 10 photography books about Macau and organized various exhibitions. He is now The Director of the Macau Image Gallery at the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST).

3. Ieong Man Pan 

Born in Macau in 1985, Ieong Man Pan is a freelance artist who founded 1844 Macau Photography  Art Space, a commercial photography studio dedicated to showing local photographic artwork.

In 2008, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in advertising from Jinan University China, followed by a master’s degree in art from Chongqing University in 2012 in which he specialised in photographic art research. As an established photographic artist in Macau, Ieong has seen his works collected by the Macau Museum of Art, the old Albergue of the Macau Holy House of Mercy, Casa Garden, Beijing Poly and private collectors in China and overseas

4. Rusty Fox

Wang Lap Wong (Rusty Fox) was born in Macau in 1991. He acquired his Master degree in Documentary Photography in University of South Wales, Newport, UK, and Bachelor degree in Photography in University of East London, UK.

Fox’s works have always been concerned with the balance and imbalance within the city; his interest focuses on the relation between living organism and inanimate objects. To him, documentary photography has no limits of its presentation. His body of work allows viewers to aware the neglected connection of living beings and inorganic things, leading us to the hidden message underneath through his pursuit of extraordinary truth from ordinary. Therefore, allowing the images to speak for themselves.

5. Ricardo Lima

Ricardo Lima is a concept artist and illustrator working for the entertainment industry. He graduated in drawing by the Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon and later went to Singapore where he studied at Feng Zhu School of Design. After finishing his studies, Ricardo went back to Portugal and started freelancing. Most recently he worked with Eidos Montreal for the title “Shadow of the Tomb Raider,” and he is now part of One Pixel Brush team.

6. André Carrilho

In a career spanning 30 years, André Carrilho has won more than 100 awards and honours for illustration, editorial cartoons, animation, and caricature, and has shown his work in group and solo exhibitions in Portugal, Spain, Brazil, France, the Czech Republic, China and the United States. His work has been published in large number of newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, the Independent on Sunday, NZZ am Sonntag, Harper’s Magazine, Diário de Notícias and the New Statesman.

In 2002 he was awarded the Gold Award for Illustrator’s Portfolio by the Society for News Design (US), one of the world’s most prestigious illustration awards. In 2015, one of his cartoons on the Ebola epidemic garnered worldwide acclaim, winning the Grand Prize at the World Press Cartoon awards. The same year, he was invited to create a caricature mural to decorate the famous annual Vanity Fair Oscar Party.  In 2020 he wrote and illustrated the picture book “A Menina com os Olhos Ocupados” (The Girl with the Occupied Eyes), which won a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators.

7. Ana Aragão

Ana Aragão (Porto, 1984) graduated as an architect from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP, 2009). With a scholarship from FCT, she pursued her PhD in the Department of Architecture at the University of Coimbra (2011-2014). Currently, she dedicates herself exclusively to drawing, exploring the themes of urban imaginaries and paper architecture.

Some of her most relevant projects include participation in the Italian Pavilion of the 2021 Venice Biennale and the Portuguese Representation in the 2014 edition. Since 2012, she has been part of collective and individual exhibitions in Portugal and abroad.

In 2024, Ana was awarded the Porto City Medal of Merit (Medalha de Mérito da Cidade do Porto) and, in 2025, she represented Portugal at Expo 2025 Osaka in the Portugal Pavilion with the series My Plan for Japan. She has worked at the Centro Cultural de Belém, Museu do Oriente (Macau e Portugal), Museu da Presidência da República (Belém Palace, Lisbon), and SNBA, and is represented in collections worldwide.

8. Fan Sai Hong

Born in Macau, Fai Sai Hong began his artistic journey at the age of four under the tutelage of renowned artist Lio Man Cheong, mastering the fundamentals of still-life sketching and watercolour. Although he initially pursued Electrical Engineering in Hangzhou, he eventually returned to his roots in Macau to study Visual Arts at the Macao Polytechnic Institute.

A pivotal shift in his practice occurred while working at the Old Ladies’ House Art Space. Influenced by Yank Wong (Hong Kong) and Morgan O’Hara (USA), his work transitioned from “observational sketching” to “internalized abstraction”—capturing the “heart-seeing” rather than just the “eye-seeing.” This period of experimentation led him to the 10th Nippon International Performance Art Festival (NIPAF’03) and a year of solitary sculpture creation in a Coloane shipyard, where he created ephemeral works intended for the sea.

After publishing his sketch collection, FAI CHI KEI 6th ANDAR, and completing his degree, he spent a year traveling through Oceania and Europe, further refining his perspective. In recent years, influenced by the independent comic movement, especially artist Siu Hak, chihoi, he has expanded his practice into digital platforms and graphic novels, blending his rigorous sketching background with contemporary narrative storytelling.

9. Lio Man Cheong

Born in 1951 in Zhuhai, China, Lio Man Cheong has lived in Macau since he was young.  He is a member of the Chinese Artists Association and Vice Chairman of the Macau Artist Society.

Lio has engaged in the profession of art design for film advertising for over 30 years and was also commissioned to design stamps for Macau Post. He is now a watercolour and portrait painting instructor with the Macau Museum of Art for their spring and summer art courses.

Lio has been a participating artist on a regular basis at fine art activities and collective exhibitions organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau,  the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, and the Macau Artist Society, since the 1970s.

10. Chao Iok Leng

Chao Iok Leng currently serves as the Vice President of the Macau Yi Un Calligraphy and Painting Association, an academic advisor for the Macao Association of Chinese Culture and Arts, an art advisor for the Macao Culture and Art Association, an honorary advisor for International Women Artists Association-Macao, and a member of the Macau Artist Society. Chao Iok Leng founded Livraria Ngai Chi Hin in the 1980s in Macau, supplying the “Four Treasures of the Study” and craft supplies, benefiting fellow artists and gaining high praise in the industry. In the early 2000s, she established Nam Fan Lou, selling various types of artistic fans as another medium to promote and develop calligraphy and painting art. She can be described as consistent in her pursuits, embodying the essence of a true artist in both calligraphy and painting.

11.Clara Brito

Clara Brito, a Macau resident, is a Portuguese designer and event curator living in Macau and Mainland China for over 19 years. She is also the founder of Tomorrow’s Heritage and co-founder of Lines Lab. Dubbed as “must-see” creative agency by the New York Times, it was awarded the “40 under 40” by Perspective Hong Kong in 2008 in the category of Fashion Design, as well as on the global lusophone top 20 ranking by Monocle Magazine.  She is also the co-founder and current president of +853 Cultural Association, a cultural non-profit association created in 2007, and a co-founder of the yearly event This Is My City, a multicultural festival showcasing local and international talents in Macau, China and internationally. Clara Brito, a woman of many projects, owns Munhub, a local company related to the fashion industry, which has established a network of designers from Asian and Portuguese-speaking countries. And co-founded in 2011, together with architect Carlos Marreiros and Manuel Silva, the initiative Macau Fashion Link which promoted and encouraged the local talents and industry to develop their potential and opportunities throughout the Pearl River Delta and the Portuguese-speaking countries.

12. Yang Sio Maan

Yang Sio Maan is a Macau-based illustrator and picture book maker. Working with collage and mixed media, her work explores urban life, capturing human emotions and relationships. Her work has gained international recognition, including selections for the BCBF Illustrators Exhibition, the BRAW Amazing Bookshelf, and the World Illustration Awards.

13.Crystal W. M. Chan

Crystal Wai Man Chan is an artist born and raised in Macao whose practice includes painting and sound installation. She has studied and worked in Taiwan, Greece, and New York, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the School of Visual Arts in New York and her Master of Fine Arts degree at Purchase College, State University of New York.

Affect and atmosphere are two recurrent elements in Chan’s artwork. In her paintings, isolated figures and desolate landscapes are drawn with expressive lines and brushstrokes. In her sound installations, field recordings from nature and urban environments are combined with improvised music played on both traditional and non-traditional instruments to create an otherworldly setting.

Growing up, Chan experienced Macao’s transition from Portuguese to Chinese rule and she has lived in various places herself. This cultural shift and change of identity led her to explore questions of identity and representation, the complexity of identity, as well as the prejudices and expectations it faces in society. Through her artwork, familiar yet blurred elements address the feelings of displacement and estrangement, provoking consideration of the relationship between humans and their environments.

14. Bianca Lei Sio-Chong

Bianca gained an MA (First Class) in fine art from Middlesex University, London, in 2001 and a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University in 2000. She is currently a full-time lecturer at Macao Polytechnic Institute’s Centre of Sino-Western Cultural Studies and programme curator at the Macao Ox Warehouse Art Space. She is also an organiser of the Experimental Moving Image Festival in Macau (EXiM) and a founder of Art for All Society (AFA).

Bianca’s art has focused mainly on the dynamic relationship between humankind and environmental factors such as place and time, reflecting on issues deriving from rapid urban development in Macau over the past decade, and has explored the boundaries between different media, means of presentation, such as canvas, and images themselves, and also between artworks and the spaces in which they are exhibited.
