Murmurs – Storytelling Illustrations by Yang Sio Maan

Yang Sio Maan has a unique and unmistakable style of illustration, which in the recent years has also been developed into objects and art installations. Her fresh approach regarding the representation of the daily life conveys a warm, imaginative and poetic atmosphere much needed to balance the hectic and aggressive real environment. Her solo exhibition at Taipa Village Art Space is intended to spread this warm-hearted spirit through her storytelling skills. Taking this opportunity, Yang will also launch her first picture book entitled “Mr. Matos Went to Buy Tomatoes” published by Fizzy Ink Publishing Ltd.

In the exhibition, Yang showcases three collections of illustrations. “Mr. Matos Went to Buy Tomatoes” consists of a display of printed picture books, original sketches and an engaging art installation at the venue that represents the story itself.  A second collection showcases nine giclée prints from selected illustrations she recently created for Voice & Verse Poetry Magazine, a Hong Kong poetry print publication. Lastly, the exhibition presents a new interpretation featuring a comic entitled “Lemon Tea” that explores the small, simple pleasures of daily life.  The three collections of illustrations encapsulates the essence of her unique illustration styles and conveys a rich testimonial of her creative work journey.

About Yang Sio Maan

Yang Sio Maan is an independent illustrator and visual narrator based in Macau. She finds colours in the oblivious stuff in life, often capturing the emotions that lie within. She is comfortable working with soft tones and the use of metaphors, which involve quiet characters wandering in faraway landscapes and dreams.

Yang takes commissions locally and remotely. Apart from the active involvements in areas like visual art projects, book design and alternative publishing, she is also a part-time lecturer at the Macau Polytechnic University.

Her works have gained worldwide recognitions, such as the World Illustration Awards, 3✕3 International Illustration Show and the Hiii Illustration.
